Silver oxidizes over time, causing it to turn black. This natural process is caused by contact with the atmosphere, and fortunately is reversible.
We should take care to protect our jewellery, taking care not to drop, hit or scratch it, but also to protect it from moisture and atmospheric deterioration.
As a general tip for good use of your jewellery, the following are the following:
Avoid direct contact with creams, cosmetics, hair styling products and perfumes. Body creams and cosmetics due to various chemical elements they contain affect the glaze of the metal causing the well-known tanning as well as the same happens with perfumes because they contain essential oils and alcohol. Never spray perfume near or on the jewellery. Body creams and other cosmetics are best applied long before you wear your jewellery.
Do not wear your jewellery while sleeping because the chains may be knocked or pulled and break.
Avoid knocks and scratches which can cause permanent marks and damage to the metal and stones.
Never bring your jewellery into contact with household cleaning products (e.g. bleach, etc.). Exposure to chemicals can damage or discolor precious metals and may also damage some colored stones.
Do not wear your jewellery in the bathroom or in a chlorinated pool. Hand washing or bathing can leave soap residue under the stones of your beloved ring, or the various chemicals can permanently damage the surface of your pearls and other delicate or porous gemstones such as turquoise.
Do not wear jewellery when doing physical tasks such as housework, gardening or sports activities.
When you take the jewellery off, wipe it with a clean, soft cloth to remove any oils and sweat and store each piece separately in a cloth-covered box.
Avoid direct sunlight and heat. Light and heat can affect the durability and color of colored gemstones. Pearls and other delicate materials may become bleached under extreme light exposure. Excessive heat and sudden temperature changes can also damage some gemstones. Heat can easily remove the natural moisture that gemstones need to maintain their beauty. Pearls, for example, can dry out, crack and discolor. Opals can turn white or brown, develop tiny cracks and lose their color change.
Jewellery Cleaning
You can use the following procedure to clean the surface dullness from your jewellery and at the same time brighten the stones that adorn it.
- In a container, make lukewarm soap with a little dishwashing detergent.
Dip your jewellery there. You can leave them for several minutes, especially if your jewellery has stones on the sides of which residues of everyday life (e.g. from soaps, creams, sweat, dust, etc.) have accumulated. - With a soft brush, brush the jewellery carefully, especially around the stones or other areas with a gap.
- Rinse with plenty of water and wipe gently with a soft cloth.
But beware of jewellery with pearls, which can easily be scratched. Use a new, clean makeup brush and warm soapy water to clean them. Place pearl jewelry on a towel to dry.The wet silk thread used to tie the pearls can stretch and also attract dirt, so don't touch the jewelry until it is completely dry.
